STAIRWAY TO THE STARS
by Mary Hoffman
There was once a little girl who wanted the stars to play with. Every night she looked out of her bedroom window and thought they looked so bright and sparkly she would like to have them for a gmae of marbles or to make a necklace with.
One day she decided to set out to find the stars. She asked everyone she met until at last she caught with the Good Folk, dancing on the grass. "Have you seen the stars in the sky?" she asked. "For I'd dearly love some to play with."
"Why," said the Good Folk, "we often see them shining on the grass while we dance. Dance wiith us and you may see them too."
So the little girl danced till she was warm as toast, but she didn't see any stars. Then one of the Good Folk said, "If you really wan to reac hthe stars, you must get Four Feet to carry then No Feet, and then you must climb the stairway without steps..."
The little girl hurried away and soon she came to where a horse was tied to a tree. "You must be Four Fee," she said. "The Good Folk said you must carry me to No Feet, because I am on my way to the stars!"
The horse obeyed and carried her out of the hourse and to the wild seashore. On the water was a wide silver path leading to an arch of many colours.
"This is as far as I go," said the horse and the little girl got down. A big fish swam right up to her at the water's edge. "Are you No Feet?" she asked. "The Good Folks sent me here on Four Feet and I am on my way to the stars."
"Get on my back and hold tight," said the fish. The little girl clung on and the fish swam through the water along the wide silver path to the coloured arch. When they reached it, he said "There's your way. You have to climb the arch if you can."
"The stairway to the stars at last!" thought the little girl, and she started to climb. But it was really hard. There were no steps and it was so shiny bright that the little girl got dazzled and dizzy. And the higher she climbed into the freezing starlight till she was shivering with fear and cold and at last she could hang on no longer and she let go.
She came to with a bang on the bare boards by her bed at home, with the starlight streaming through her window and the window and the tears streaming down her face. And she never knew if she would have the stars to play with if she had managed to hang on a bit longer.
